Taligent Inc. was an American software company created as a partnership between Apple and IBM in 1992. The company name combined "talent" and "intelligent." Based on Apple's Pink operating system concept from 1988, Taligent existed until its dissolution into IBM in January 1998.

The Pink project began in March 1988 when Apple's "Gang of Five" senior engineers—Erich Ringewald, David Goldsmith, Bayles Holt, Gene Pope, and Gerard Schutten—demanded the freedom to develop next-generation operating system technology. At the Sonoma Mission Inn, ideas were organized by colored index cards: blue for incremental improvements, pink for advanced technology, and red for radical concepts.

Ringewald led Pink's development with ambitions for an object-oriented system featuring preemptive multitasking, memory protection, and advanced graphics. By 1989, Pink had become a functional prototype demonstrating sophisticated capabilities beyond System 6.

AIM Alliance

On October 2, 1991, Apple, IBM, and Motorola formed the historic AIM alliance. This partnership created two significant ventures: Kaleida Labs (for multimedia) and Taligent Inc. (to commercialize Pink).

CommonPoint gained recognition for technological sophistication but suffered from a severe learning curve. Hewlett-Packard's beginner's guide noted that experienced C++ programmers required "at least three months" to approach their first application.

Stephen Kurtzman, IBM Microkernel project lead, summarized the framework complexity: "frameworks were so powerful that you could write any program in three lines of code, but it would take you 6 months to figure out what those three lines were."
